Meet Anthony V: Tattoo Artist, Multi-Media Creator, Canadian, and all around cool cat

Somehow this month, these weeks have gotten away from me, where does the time go here in New England in the fall?

Today I find myself super thankful for being safe, having a roof without trees through it and thinking of everyone hit by the storm that was…..

Our featured artist for the month (well it is the last day of October) is Anthony V. Anthony is someone I have known for YEARS. We met while working together at a strange little place and instantly became friends. His kindness, creativity and humor are like magnets and I was totally drawn to him. We connected in an odd place and time, he is someone I do not see a lot, but think of often.

SO you say, what is his story? What odd place do you know him from?

An rarely known fact about me… and maybe more commonly known fact about Anthony… we worked together at an old New England farm that was transformed into one of US’s first and largest horror theme park: Spookyworld. Anthony was recruited and brought into to help make Spookyworld a truly creepy and fantastic place to scare the pants off of people. He has amazing skills in the artistry of makeup, model making and a great sense of drama. If you ever need a fantastic artist or are seeking an original piece of body art Ant is your man. Let’s see what inspires him:

1. Tell us what you do?

I work as an artist….always… painting, sculpting, creating. My full time job is a custom tattoo artist at True Love Tattoo in London Ontario (that’s Canada people :0)

Here he is at work, Anthony says of this pic:

“it’s almost candid and I like the look of serious concentration proving that making monsters can be quite serious… ha ha and my outfit is kinda cool too”

2. What is the best/most satisfying part about your work?

The love of creation and the excitement of the newness of each project.

3. What is the most surprising thing about working for yourself?

The busier I get the more ideas I get to explore the thinner I spread myself only makes me want it even more!

4. How long have you had your own shop/business?

I work at the tattoo shop under the owner and I work in film, television, fashion, as special effects make-up artist for myself and have for more decades than I remember. Started as a young teen with boundless enthusiasm and am well into my forties now.

5. What is the hardest thing about the business side of what you do?

Nothing comes to mind, I live a very simple life and have never been in debt or wanted to live outside my means…

6. How do you attract customers?

Word of mouth is the greatest gift of a tattoo artist and the friendships within the Make-up effects field are our greatest gift.

7. What is the hardest thing about your craft?

No repeating myself … trying always to see another way to explore an idea.

8. Describe your typical day:

Ride bicycle to tattoo shop, laugh lots with clients while tattooing the ideas we’ve made real for them…
ride home after about eight hours and four to five clients later, eat, do some drawing home work for clients, then draw/paint for fun or sculpt little creatures while sitting on the couch and watching movies till the wee hours sleep a bit then off again..

9. Do you consider yourself an expert in your craft? If not where are you on the scale of learning? How did you gain your knowledge?

As a tattoo artist with over twenty years and well over 15 thousand clients, yes I consider myself an expert. Experience is my teacher. As an Artist with even more time under my belt and as many projects as clients, no because I can never get all the ideas out there and every time I think I know what I am doing in retrospect I can always see room to learn and improve.

10. What is the best project you have completed to date? Why?

I think doing make-up effects work on the Zach Snyder, Frank Miller film 300…
The creative choices were very well made and much was left for us to create within those choices, the crew was an amazing and admirable collection of seasoned pros, creative newbies and the film was great.

13. Where do you draw inspiration from?

The internet and its vast array of artists showing off their latest works, films, art books, antique stores, fashion just about everywhere I turn I ‘see’ inspiration.

14. What one image can you share with us that is inspiring? Describe it…

Ron Muek Art
Anthony says the art of Ron Mueck …… “The pure and perfect marriage of technique and talent.”
